The territory

Between Apulia and Lucania

Climbing the hill of Monteserico, one can extend one's gaze to a border area between the tradition of Lucania (most famous for Matera, the 2019 European Capital of Culture) and the drive for innovation in Puglia, one of the most popular regions in recent years international tourism. An immense and fascinating area, embraced by three dream seas, the Adriatic, Ionian and Tyrrhenian, rich in history and culture, handed down from different peoples, with architectural finds of inestimable value: churches, castles, cathedrals, noble palaces and residences, villages enchanted and cities of art, trulli and farms. In the midst of all this, centuries-old traditions and extraordinary food.

Almost similar

Two sister regions, but with distinct characteristics. Basilicata (in the past Lucania, when it included part of Campania and Calabria), is above all mountainous and hilly, and is characterized by a single plain: Metaponto. Puglia is the easternmost region, the largest in Southern Europe and with the largest number of km of coastline (865). Mostly flat, it represents the least mountainous part of Italy.

A macro region

In the heart of the Mediterranean

Puglia and Basilicata have always represented a macro region in the heart of the Mediterranean, the so-called mare nostrum. Together they express a good part of the southern European border, enlivening an area in which history has been able to offer relationships of stability and peaceful exchange. On these social, even before economic, bases, the two regions dialogue through targeted marketing actions, which root their principles in the immense heritage of agricultural production, starting with that of wheat, passing through extra virgin olive oil and many wines.

The symbol

Located in a strategic position for controlling the commercial traffic of the Appian Way, the castle of Monteserico stands out imposingly 15 km east of Genzano di Lucania, on a hill 550 meters above sea level. Built in 1041, it became a domus with the Swabians and a directing farm with the Angevins. A solitary building, but perfectly integrated and functional to the vast territories of Puglia and Basilicata, two regions in turn at the center of the Mediterranean Sea. From its top you can admire a landscape that invites you to breathe in that crisp and clear air, a source of well-being and health. An immense heritage, which coagulates around itself any activity.
